A Bilingual Journey of Music, Community, and Queerness

English in Bold

Un viaje bilingüe a través de la música, la comunidad y la identidad queer

I am a southerner, the Deep South, like some people, call it, México-Americano, de Guanajuato, para ser exactos, pero enamorado de Colombia por su música, su gente y su comida. I am graduated from a university in Tennessee with a B.S. in Sociology.

I’m from the South, the Deep South, as some people call it. I’m Mexican-American, from Guanajuato, to be precise, but I’m in love with Colombia because of its music, its people, and its food. I graduated from a university in Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. People call me “güerito” (little blondie), “la güera” (the blonde girl), “the polar bear,” “gordito” (little chubby one), “amiga” (friend), or “mana” (sister). I’m here so you can practice your Spanglish because I’m not going to focus on just one language, even if people label me however they want. I’m part of the Queer community, but I don’t consider myself part of the LGBTQI+ community because we’re still very far from being truly accepted.

Es un lugar para hablar de la vida, del nonexistent love, de la inmortalidad del cangrejo sin caer en que a chuchita la bolsearon, como quien dice, I am here to talk about everything and nothing. I live with Anxiety, who is not a great partner because sometimes se le safa el tornillo y por consecuencia me lleva a mí de corbata, pero aun así es parte de mi vida y no lo puedo negar. Perhaps you won’t understand it, or you will have a bunch of suggestions on how to deal with it.  This is not a place for remedies unless they come from the heart, or from a personal experience.

This is a place to talk about life, about the elusive nature of love, about the supposed immortality of crabs—without getting into trivial details, so to speak. I’m here to talk about everything and nothing. I live with anxiety, which isn’t a very pleasant companion because sometimes it goes completely out of control and drags me down with it, but even so, it’s part of my life, and I can’t deny that. Perhaps you won’t understand it, or you might have a lot of suggestions on how to deal with it. This isn’t a place for offering unsolicited advice unless it comes from the heart or is based on personal experience.

Soy padre de una hermosa princesa llamada Macaria, she is my company, my best friend and the only one who lives with me every single day (and that is a lot to say) You will read a lot about her, and I am pretty sure you will see many pictures from her cuteness.

La música es muy importante para mí, sin música no sobrevivo. Soy aficionado de todo tipo de música, pero en especial: salsa, vallenato, cumbia, bachata, banda, country, música clásica, coral, en fin de todo lo que se pueda y se aprecie. I love to get to know about where music comes from and what music does to people. That is why folk music is important to understand the roots, traditions and beliefs of native people and community in general.

I am the father of a beautiful little girl named Macaria. She is my companion, my best friend, and the only one who lives with me every single day (and that’s saying a lot!). You will read a lot about her, and I’m sure you will see many pictures of her adorable self.

Music is very important to me; I can’t live without it. I enjoy all kinds of music, but especially: salsa, vallenato, cumbia, bachata, banda, country, classical music, choral music—basically anything that’s good and worth appreciating. I love learning about the origins of music and its impact on people. That’s why folk music is so important; it helps us understand the roots, traditions, and beliefs of indigenous people and communities in general.
